Dr. Mazaleyrat is postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Pyle’s lab in Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics (MIMG), and a member of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research (BSCRC) at UCLA. Dr. Mazaleyrat completed his Ph.D. work with Dr. Frederique Magdinier at INSERM in the Epigenetic, Chromatin and Disease Modeling Research group in Marseille, France. Before that Dr. Mazaleyrat obtained his masters in Dr Magdinier’s lab on the telomeric position effect in the 1P36 syndrome.

Dr. Mazaleyrat has been developing improved directed differentiation strategies for skeletal muscle and muscle stem cells. In his Ph.D. work he developed a novel differentiation approach including combinations of small molecules added in a precise sequence for the simultaneous codifferentiation of human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) into skeletal muscle cells and motor neurons. He has now optimized this protocol to generate uniform neuromuscular tissues including skeletal muscle, motor neurons and Schwann cells.

Dr. Mazaleyrat has received several awards including, “Young innovators” award during his Ph.D in France and a patent surrounding his Ph.D. work. He helped launch a startup in France with his Ph.D. mentor, Dr. Magdinier focused on neuromuscular disease modeling and therapeutics.
